Development
In 1990, Tim Burton wanted to make a new Beetlejuice movie called “Beetlejuice Goes Hawaiian.” The idea was to mix a beach movie with spooky stuff, but it didn’t happen. The story was about a family in Hawaii who discover they’re building a resort on an ancient burial ground. A spirit causes trouble, and Beetlejuice becomes a hero by winning a surf contest with magic. Actors like Michael Keaton and Winona Ryder were interested, but the movie never got made because of other projects.
Over the years, different writers and filmmakers tried to make the sequel, but it kept getting delayed or changed. In 2011, Warner Bros. hired someone to write and produce a new Beetlejuice movie. They wanted to make sure it wasn’t just about money but had a good story. They hoped to return the original actors like Michael Keaton and Winona Ryder.
They often talked about making the movie, even finishing the script in 2015, but it never happened. In 2019, Warner Bros. said they stopped working on the sequel for now.
Pre-production
In February 2022, they said they’d make a new movie. Brad Pitt’s company and Warner Bros. would work on it together. At first, Burton, the director, wasn’t part of it, but later, he changed his mind and joined in. He wanted to focus on the basics of moviemaking—working with good people, actors, and puppets.
They talked about Jenna Ortega playing Astrid Deetz, Lydia’s daughter, in March 2023. Danny Elfman would make the music again. Ortega was confirmed to star, and two writers made the script.
They added Justin Theroux and Willem Dafoe to the cast, but their roles still needed to be revealed. Dafoe’s character is an afterlife police officer who used to be a movie star before he died. Catherine O’Hara and Monica Bellucci would also be in the movie.
Colleen Atwood, who often works with Burton, would design the costumes. They discussed bringing back Betelgeuse’s striped suit, famous like Alice in Wonderland’s blue dress, but the actor Michael Keaton preferred a different outfit.
Filming
They planned to start making the movie in 2022, but it got delayed. They finally began on May 10, 2023, in London. They had to stop briefly because of a strike but continued filming in England and Vermont. The director said most of the movie was finished by November 30, 2023.
