Joachim Rønning, born on May 30, 1972, is a film director from Sandefjord, Norway. He used to work with Espen Sandberg, and together they were known as Roenberg, a mix of their last names. They co-own Motion Blur, a large production company for commercials in Scandinavia. Now, Joachim works alone, making movies and TV shows.
Joachim married Amanda Hearst on August 2, 2019.
In 2006, Joachim and Espen Sandberg directed their first movie, “Bandidas,” starring Penélope Cruz and Salma Hayek. The movie was released worldwide by EuropaCorp and Twentieth Century Fox and was written and produced by French filmmaker Luc Besson.
Their 2012 movie “Kon-Tiki” was the first Norwegian film nominated for a Golden Globe and an Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film at the 85th Academy Awards. They also directed the fifth “Pirates of the Caribbean” movie, “Dead Men Tell No Tales,” in 2017.
In October 2017, it was announced that Joachim would direct “Maleficent: Mistress of Evil,” with Angelina Jolie starring again. The movie came out in 2019.
In 2016, Joachim directed the pilot for a new ABC thriller drama series called “Doomsday,” starring Rochelle Aytes.
In 2017, it was announced that Paramount bought a project called “Origin,” which Joachim will direct and co-write with his brother Andreas Rønning. The movie will be produced by Jerry Bruckheimer. Joachim is also set to direct “Micro,” based on Michael Crichton’s last novel, for Amblin Entertainment.
Joachim was considered to direct “Top Gun: Maverick” but had to drop out due to scheduling conflicts.
In 2018, Joachim was reported to be directing “Here There Be Monsters,” a sci-fi thriller he co-wrote with his brother. This film was set to start after “Maleficent: Mistress of Evil.”
In 2023, Joachim was chosen to replace Garth Davis as the director of “Tron: Ares,” the third movie in the Tron series, with filming set to begin in early 2024. He will also direct “Pirates of the Caribbean 6.”
