Marielle Stiles Heller is an American filmmaker who directs movies and writes scripts. She’s known for making films like “The Diary of a Teenage Girl” (2015), “Can You Ever Forgive Me?” (2018), and “A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood” (2019). She’s also acted in the show “The Queen’s Gambit” (2020).

Heller was born in Marin County, California, on October 1, 1979. Her dad is a chiropractor and her mom is an artist and teacher. She grew up in Alameda with her younger brother and sister. Heller started her career as an actor in children’s theater and later studied theater at UCLA and in London.

Her first big film was “The Diary of a Teenage Girl,” which she both wrote and directed. It’s based on a graphic novel about a teenage girl in 1976 San Francisco who starts a relationship with her mom’s boyfriend. The film got a lot of praise and won awards.

Besides directing, Heller has written screenplays and worked on TV shows. She also acted in theater and shows like “Spin City” and “Single Dads.”

Heller is married to comedian Jorma Taccone, and they have two kids. Her family is a big inspiration for her work.
