The main actors are Margaret Qualley, Geraldine Viswanathan, Beanie Feldstein, Colman Domingo, Pedro Pascal, Bill Camp, and Matt Damon.

Drive Away Dolls will be in theaters in the United States on February 23, 2024.

Premise of Drive Away Dolls

This funny story is about Jamie, who is carefree but sad after breaking up with a girlfriend, and her quiet friend Marian, who wants to have more fun. They decide to take a spontaneous trip to Tallahassee for a new beginning. However, things go wrong when they meet a group of not-so-smart criminals during their journey.

Cast

Production

Ethan Coen and his wife, Tricia Cooke, came up with the idea for a movie while talking to their friend Allison Anders during a Christmas vacation in San Francisco in the early 2000s. They officially announced the film in January 2007 with the title “Drive Away Dykes,” and Allison Anders was set to direct it. The movie’s vibe was supposed to be like the romance films Ethan Coen enjoyed as a teenager in the early 1970s. Stars like Selma Blair, Holly Hunter, Christina Applegate, and Chloë Sevigny were initially involved.

By April 2022, there were reports that Coen would be directing the film, now described as an untitled “lesbian road trip project.” It was produced by Coen, Cooke, Robert Graf, Tim Bevan, and Eric Fellner from Working Title.

This movie marked Ethan Coen’s first time directing on his own, without his brother Joel, and it was his first narrative film since “The Ballad of Buster Scruggs” in 2018. Coen explained that he took a break from making films in 2018 because it started feeling more like a job than something enjoyable after 30 years in the industry. The COVID-19 pandemic allowed them to work on the film, according to Coen and Cooke.

In August 2022, Margaret Qualley and Geraldine Viswanathan joined the cast, followed by Beanie Feldstein in September. In April 2023, the title was revealed as “Drive Away Dolls,” and actors like Pedro Pascal, Colman Domingo, Bill Camp, and Matt Damon were added to the cast.

Filming began in Pittsburgh in August 2022 with cinematographer Ari Wegner. Production also occurred in Hopewell Township, Beaver County, Pennsylvania, in October 2022.

Release

Focus Features will release the movie “Drive Away Dolls” in the United States on February 23, 2024. It was supposed to be released on September 22, 2023, but there was a delay because of the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike.
