Dune Part Two is a big movie coming out in 2024. It’s a science fiction film directed by Denis Villeneuve. It’s the second part of a story that started with a movie called ‘Dune’ in 2021. This movie follows a character named Paul Atreides as he joins forces with the Fremen people on a desert planet called Arrakis. They want to fight against House Harkonnen.

The movie has many actors returning from the first film, like Timothée Chalamet and Zendaya, and some new ones joining, such as Austin Butler and Florence Pugh.

The idea for this movie started a while ago, and they planned to make it in two parts because the story is very long. They weren’t sure if they could make the second part, but when the first movie did well, they also got the green light to make the second one.

They started filming in places like Budapest, Italy, and Abu Dhabi between July and December 2022.

Thanks to Warner Bros. Pictures, the movie will come out on March 1, 2024.

Production of Dune Part Two

Development of Dune Part Two

In March 2018, Denis Villeneuve wanted to make a movie based on a book called Dune. He planned to make it in two parts, like they did with the movie “It” in 2017 and 2019. He said the book was too complicated for just one movie. In January 2019, Joe Walker was chosen as the movie’s editor. Many other people were selected for different jobs in the movie, too.

Villeneuve, Mary Parent, and Cale Boyter will make Dune Part Two. Some other people will help make it happen, too. They said they wanted to make a sequel and stop it at a good point in the story.

In December 2020, Villeneuve worried that the first movie might not do well because it would simultaneously be shown in theatres and on HBO Max. He was concerned the sequel might get canceled because of this. But they hinted at a sequel when they showed the first bit of the movie in IMAX.

By August 2021, Villeneuve was more hopeful about making the sequel. He was excited to work with specific actors again and said one character would have a more significant part in the next movie. Warner Bros. said they’d agree to make the sequel if the first movie did well on HBO Max.

Just before the first movie came out, the Warner Bros. CEO hinted at a sequel based on how the first movie ended.

On October 26, 2021, they officially decided to make Dune Part Two. The people involved thanked everyone who helped and said they’re looking forward to making more Dune. Before they agreed to make the sequel, they made a deal to show it only in theatres for a while.

Villeneuve wanted to finish filming the sequel of Dune Part Two as soon as possible, and he thought they could start by the end of 2022. He considered making the second movie would be quicker because they had already done much work on the first one.

Writing of Dune Part Two

In April 2017, Eric Roth started working on a movie script. Later, Jon Spaihts joined him and Denis Villeneuve to write the script together. They hired David Peterson in April 2019 to create new languages for the movie Dune Part Two.

In November 2019, Jon Spaihts left one part of the movie to focus on another. Then, in June 2020, Greig Fraser said that the first movie was a complete story. Eric Roth planned the sequel in February 2021 and started writing it in August.

In March 2022, Denis Villeneuve said they nearly finished the screenplay. He mentioned that the new movie would directly continue the story from the first one and called it the ‘second part.’ He explained that while the first movie was more thoughtful, the second would have more action.

The story mainly revolves around controlling a particular substance called spice found on Arrakis. It’s about how people use it and its impact on the environment. Villeneuve wanted to connect these big ideas to the characters, especially Paul and Chani, who have a big love story. Zendaya and Timothée Chalamet talked about how their characters flirt and how Chani’s morals guide Chalamet’s character.

After the first movie, the bad guy, Baron Harkonnen, is weak and needs lots of fluids. He’s trying to decide between his two nephews, Rabban and Feyd-Rautha, as his heir. Lady Jessica, Paul’s mom, is dealing with the trauma of her husband’s death and is making plans for the future. There’s also a focus on politics, with Princess Irulan worrying about her father losing power.

That summarises what’s going on with the movie and its story!

Casting of Dune Part Two

In March 2022, Florence Pugh and Austin Butler were said to be thinking about acting in a movie. Florence might play Princess Irulan, and Austin might play Feyd-Rautha, part of the Harkonnen family. Christopher Walken agreed to be in the movie as Shaddam IV in May. In June, Léa Seydoux started discussing joining the movie as Lady Margot. In July, Souheila Yacoub joined the movie to play Shishakli. Then, in January 2023, Tim Blake Nelson joined the cast, but they didn’t say what role he would play.

Music of Dune Part Two

Hans Zimmer made the music for the movie again. He also made music for the last movie. Before they even said they were making this new movie, Zimmer had already made more than an hour of music. He did this to help the director, Villeneuve, get inspired while writing the movie.

Release of Dune Part Two

Dune Part Two was supposed to come out on October 20, 2023, but was moved to November 17, 2023. Then, it was changed again to November 3, 2023, because other movies changed their release dates. But because of problems with workers in Hollywood, it got delayed a lot, and instead of coming out in March 2024, it was supposed to come out in November 2023. But when the problems with workers were fixed, the movie moved to March 1, 2024. Also, they said the movie would play in notable theatres in IMAX 70 mm format because another movie did well.
