Madame Web is a new movie from Marvel Comics about a superhero. It’s made by Columbia Pictures and Di Bonaventura Pictures, with help from Marvel Entertainment. Sony Pictures will put it out. This movie is one of Sony’s Spider-Man movies.
It’s directed by S. J. Clarkson and written by Clarkson, Claire Parker, Matt Sazama, and Burk Sharpless. The story comes from Kerem Sanga, Sazama, and Sharpless. Dakota Johnson plays the main character, and other actors like Sydney Sweeney, Celeste O’Connor, Isabela Merced, and Tahar Rahim are also in it.
Sony started planning this movie in 2019. They got writers to work on the story. Clarkson joined in 2020 to direct, and Johnson was picked for the lead role in 2022. They filmed in places like Boston, Massachusetts, and New York City from mid-2022 to the end of that year.
The movie will appear in the United States on February 14, 2024.
Premise of Madame Web
Cassandra, also known as Cassie Webb, has to deal with her past while staying safe with three young women who have strong abilities. A dangerous enemy is chasing them.

Development
After working on the Morbius movie in 2022, Sony Pictures hired two writers, Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless, in 2019 to make a story about a Marvel character called Madame Web. Palak Patel, a big boss at Sony, was watching over the project. Another writer, Kerem Sanga, had already written some parts of the movie before.
Then, in 2020, S. J. Clarkson was chosen to create and direct Sony’s first Marvel movie centred on a woman, which was supposed to be about Madame Web. Sony wanted a famous actress like Charlize Theron or Amy Adams to be in the movie and hired a new writer to make the story fit her. After talking to many top-notch actors, Sony decided on Dakota Johnson for the leading role. Sydney Sweeney joined the movie in March.
The movie was like Sony’s version of Doctor Strange because Madame Web in the comics has special powers. But there were hints that the movie might be different from the comics. Some people wondered if Dakota Johnson would play the older Madame Web or a younger version named Julia Carpenter.
Sony set the release date for Madame Web on July 7, 2023, with Dakota Johnson and Sydney Sweeney as the stars.
The producer, Lorenzo di Bonaventura, called the movie a thriller. He said Madame Web’s ability to see the future was tricky and hinted that the movie might focus less on action. They kept many details secret because most people knew little about Madame Web. Sydney Sweeney mentioned that the movie would differ from what people usually expect from superhero movies.
Pre-production
In May 2022, Sony Pictures’ big boss, Tom Rothman, said they’d start filming a movie in the spring. Celeste O’Connor got a role in the film, telling how the main character started. The movie will show a new side to the surface and her beginning. Later in June, Isabela Merced, Tahar Rahim, and Emma Roberts joined the team.
In a new Spider-Verse story, these actors might play well-known characters like Spider-Woman and Gwen Stacy. They said the movie might be about more than just Madame Web. They planned to start filming in mid-July 2022. One actor, Sweeney, was getting ready to start filming. She trained and read comics about her character, Julia Carpenter. Johnson was also preparing for the movie. In that same month, Mike Epps joined the cast.
Filming
They started taking pictures for the movie on July 11, 2022, in Boston’s Financial District. They made scenes resembling New York City in the 2000s, even filming in Chinatown, Manhattan. The movie was called “Claire” while filming, and Mauro Fiore, who worked on “Spider-Man: No Way Home,” was the cinematographer.
Adam Scott joined the actors while filming, and the release date was moved to October 6, 2023. They filmed in different places in Massachusetts, like Allston, Chelsea, Andover, and Worcester, for driving scenes. Then, they moved to New York City for more scenes at places like Grand Central Station. They finished filming by October 18, 2023, and completed everything by mid-January 2023. They planned to film in Mexico, too.
Music
In November 2023, they said that Johan Söderqvist, who worked with Clarkson on the show Anatomy of a Scandal in 2022, would make the music for the movie.
Release
The Madame Web movie will appear in theatres in the USA on February 14, 2024, in IMAX. Before, it was planned to come out on July 7, 2023, October 6, 2023, and February 16, 2024.
In December 2022, Sony made a deal with a streaming service called Crave in Canada. Starting in April 2023, Crave will show Sony’s movies after they’ve been in theatres and on home media. Madame Web is included in this deal for streaming rights.
