Production of Moana 2
Development
In December 2020, at a meeting for Disney investors, Jennifer Lee, who leads Walt Disney Animation Studios, said they were making a new show for Disney+ based on the movie Moana from 2016. By August 2021, they said Osnat Shurer would produce it again. In January 2022, they said David Derrick Jr. would write and direct it. He had drawn the first movie. The show started being made at the same time as a new Moana movie. Jared Bush, who wrote the first movie, wrote this one too.
In February 2024, Disney’s boss Bob Iger said they changed the show into a new movie called Moana 2. Derrick and Shurer are still working on it. When the first video came out in May, they said Jason Hand and Dana Ledoux Miller would help Derrick direct. Christina Chen and Yvett Merino will be the new producers instead of Shurer.
Casting of Moana 2
TV show would become a movie, Auliʻi Cravalho and Dwayne Johnson agreed to play Moana and Maui again. Dwayne Johnson said he’s been part of the movie from the start and is excited for fans to see it, with new technology and cool effects. At a festival, they announced more actors joining, like Temuera Morrison and Nicole Scherzinger as Moana’s parents again. They also mentioned Khaleesi Lambert-Tsuda as Moana’s new sister, and Rose Matafeo, David Fane, and Hualālai Chung as Moana’s crew members.
Animation
The animation for the series started at Walt Disney Animation Studios’ Vancouver branch while it was being created. Before that, planning and drawing happened at the studio in Burbank. This movie was the first one made in Vancouver, even though another project called Iwájú came out before it that year. At the Annecy International Animation Film Festival, they announced that Mark Henn and Eric Goldberg, who are experienced, will lead a group of new animators to draw Maui’s tattoos by hand. Goldberg had already been in charge of the drawings for “Mini Maui” in the first movie.
Music
Mark Mancina and Opetaia Foaʻi are back to make the music for the movie. Abigail Barlow and Emily Bear wrote the songs this time, instead of Lin-Manuel Miranda who wrote songs for the first movie.
