Piece by Piece is a new movie that tells the story of Pharrell Williams, a famous musician. It’s made with Lego animation, which means the characters are like Lego toys. The movie is directed by Morgan Neville, who is making his first animated film.
Pharrell Williams wanted to make a movie about his life since 2013, but it became serious in 2019 when he talked with Morgan Neville. They started working on it that year. The movie is being made with help from The Lego Group and other companies. Pharrell Williams also helps produce the movie and wrote two new songs for it.
In the movie, you’ll hear the voices of other famous musicians like Gwen Stefani, Kendrick Lamar, and Justin Timberlake. Some parts of the movie were filmed with Pharrell Williams himself, and other parts were made with Lego animation.
The movie will come out in theaters in the United States on October 11, 2024, and Universal Pictures will show it around the world.

Development of Piece by Piece
The movie took about five years to make. After Pharrell Williams had success with his songs “Happy” and “Get Lucky” in 2013, his agent suggested he make a biography, but Pharrell didn’t want to do it like everyone else. He wanted to tell his story in a unique way that would let people imagine lots of different things. Pharrell talked to Morgan Neville, who agreed to help make the movie. Pharrell’s friend Mimi Valdés helped him decide what parts of his life to include.
Before COVID-19, Morgan Neville talked with Pharrell in person. But when the pandemic started, they had to talk on the phone instead. They also filmed some scenes, like one with Pharrell in Virginia Beach. This movie was special because it was animated, which meant they could control everything visually. They even worked with Lego to make special pieces for the movie.
Pharrell and Morgan also talked to Lego about making sure the Lego characters looked more like African-Americans. They created new pieces like boom boxes and turntables, and they designed figures for Pharrell’s friends who appear in the movie.
On June 6, 2024, they announced the cast, including Pharrell, Gwen Stefani, Kendrick Lamar, and more. In an interview, Morgan Neville said that even Daft Punk will be in the movie.
Music of Piece by Piece
Williams made two new songs for the project. He said one of them was made for a certain part in the movie. The second song was also made for a specific part and is like his big idea, saying that God is the best. Some of the music he made with his friend Chad Hugo will be in the movie too. Also, songs from other artists like Daft Punk’s “Get Lucky” and Wreckx-n-Effect’s “Rump Shaker” will be featured. The director mentioned that Williams made some songs and other music parts early on during the making of the movie.

The project started on January 26, 2024. On June 6, 2024, the first trailer for the movie was shown by Focus Features and Williams. In the trailer, Lego Williams and director Neville have a talk, then Williams talks about his career. Brendan Morrow from USA Today said the project seems like a mix of a cartoon and a documentary. Dexerto noticed that Kendrick Lamar is in the movie. People are talking about him a lot because of his issues with Drake. Some are calling him “Kendrick Lamar.” Williams said Lego will make toys for the movie.

Piece by Piece will come out in the United States on October 11, 2024.
