About Sonic the Hedgehog 3
Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is a new movie based on the Sonic video games made by Sega. It’s a funny action-packed adventure. This movie follows Sonic the Hedgehog (2020) and Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (2022). Jeff Fowler directed it, and Pat Casey, Josh Miller, and John Whittington wrote the screenplay. Casey and Miller also came up with the story.
The movie stars James Marsden, Ben Schwartz, Tika Sumpter, Colleen O’Shaughnessey, Lee Majdoub, Idris Elba, Jim Carrey, and Keanu Reeves joins the cast too.
They started planning Sonic the Hedgehog 3 in February 2022, before the second movie came out. Filming started in July 2023 in Surrey, England, for the animated parts. They filmed with real actors in London starting in November 2023 and finished by March 2024. The movie is inspired by the Sonic Adventure 2 video game from 2001.

- Ben Schwartz as Sonic the Hedgehog: An anthropomorphic blue hedgehog who can run at supersonic speeds.
- Colleen O’Shaughnessey as Miles “Tails” Prower: An anthropomorphic yellow-orange fox who can fly with his twin-tails.
- Idris Elba as Knuckles the Echidna: A hot-headed and serious anthropomorphic red echidna warrior with super strength.
- Keanu Reeves as Shadow the Hedgehog: An anthropomorphic red-striped black hedgehog resulting from a secret government program called Project Shadow.

- Jim Carrey as Dr. Ivo Robotnik, a mad scientist and Sonic’s arch-nemesis who he often refers to as “Eggman”.
- Lee Majdoub as Agent Stone, Robotnik’s assistant.
- Tom Butler as Commander Walters, the former Vice Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff who is the leader of the military organization Guardian Units of Nations (G.U.N.).

Additionally, Krysten Ritter, Sofia Pernas, Cristo Fernández, James Wolk, and Jorma Taccone were cast in undisclosed roles.
Production of Sonic the Hedgehog 3
Development
On March 6, 2020, James Marsden said he would do more movies after the first one. In February 2022, Sega Sammy Group and Paramount Pictures started working on a third Sonic the Hedgehog movie after Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (2022). They officially announced it during ViacomCBS’s investor event. Jeff Fowler is directing again, and Neal H. Moritz, Toby Ascher, Toru Nakahara, and Hitoshi Okuno are producing again. Pat Casey, Josh Miller, and John Whittington are writing the screenplay, and Casey and Miller are also coming up with the story. At the same time, they’re making a spin-off TV show called Knuckles for Paramount+. The movie will take ideas from the video game Sonic Adventure 2 (2001).

In April 2022, Jim Carrey, who plays Dr. Robotnik, said he might quit acting. If he does, Moritz and Ascher said they won’t find someone else to play Robotnik in future movies. They hope they can write good enough scripts to make him want to keep playing the part.
Production of Sonic the Hedgehog 3
In July 2023, they started filming scenes with animated characters only in Farnham, Surrey, England, because of a strike by actors. Originally, they planned to begin filming with real actors on August 31, 2023, in London, but it was delayed until September. They began filming with real actors on November 29, 2023, and announced it with a picture of a statue used as a stand-in for Shadow the Hedgehog.
Keanu Reeves joined the movie to voice Shadow after fans wanted him for the role following a cameo in the last movie. In February 2024, Carrey confirmed he would be in the movie again, along with Marsden, Ben Schwartz, Tika Sumpter, Colleen O’Shaughnessey, Idris Elba, Lee Majdoub, and Tom Butler. Krysten Ritter, Alyla Browne, James Wolk, Sofia Pernas, Cristo Fernández, and Jorma Taccone were also cast in roles that weren’t revealed at first. Browne’s role as Maria was announced on February 16. Schwartz started recording for the movie the next week.
Marsden said they finished filming by March 14, 2024, and Fowler said they finished all filming on March 29. On April 15, 2024, it was reported again that Keanu Reeves would voice Shadow the Hedgehog.
Animation
As a cost-cutting measure, the producers had their own animation team at Paramount Studios work on both Sonic the Hedgehog 3 and the Knuckles series.
Music of Sonic the Hedgehog 3
In December 2023, Johnny Gioeli, the singer from Crush 40, mentioned that there were discussions about putting the song “Live & Learn” from Sonic Adventure 2 (2001) in the movie. In January 2024, it was announced that Tom Holkenborg, who composed music for the first two films, would be back for this one too. The next month, Gioeli confirmed that “Live & Learn” will be in the movie.
Release of Sonic the Hedgehog 3
Sonic the Hedgehog 3 will come out in movie theaters in the United States on December 20, 2024, by Paramount Pictures.
