About Young Woman and the Sea
A new movie called “Young Woman and the Sea” is coming soon. It’s a true story about Gertrude Ederle, a great swimmer who won in the Olympics. The movie will be in theatres briefly starting on May 31, 2024. Daisy Ridley plays the main character.
Premise of Young Woman and the Sea
This is a story about a young woman named Gertrude Ederle. She was good at swimming and won a gold medal at the 1924 Olympic Games. Then, in 1926, she did something unique. She became the first woman to swim 21 miles across the English Channel.

Additionally, Stephen Graham, Christopher Eccleston and Jeanette Hain have been cast in undisclosed roles.
Production
Development
On November 2, 2015, they said Jerry Bruckheimer got the rights to make a movie based on Glenn Stout’s actual story book “Young Woman and the Sea.” The book is about Trudy Ederle, who swam across the English Channel and became famous. Paramount Pictures hired Jeff Nathanson to write the movie script, and Lily James was chosen to act as Gertrude Ederle.
In December 2020, news came out that Walt Disney Pictures is working on the movie now and plans to release it on Disney+. This happened because Paramount decided not to make the movie anymore, and Disney took over. Jerry Bruckheimer and Chad Oman are overseeing the production for Disney.
Casting
Lily James was supposed to be the leading actor in the movie about Gertrude Ederle, but the film needed some help getting made. In December 2020, they said Daisy Ridley would be the leading actor instead. In March 2022, Tilda Cobham-Hervey joined to play Margaret Ederle, and Stephen Graham also joined. However, we are still determining what role he will play. In May 2022, Christopher Eccleston joined, and we are still determining his role.
Filming
Filming for the movie started in May 2022 and finished on June 18, 2022.
Release
Disney+ was going to show a new movie called “Young Woman and the Sea” in 2024. After some good test screenings and the success of another sports movie, “The Boys in the Boat,” Disney thought about putting it in theatres, too. They wanted to do it around the time of the 2024 Summer Olympics in France, maybe on May 31, 2024. But later, they officially decided to release it in theatres for a short time in June 2024.
