The second big movie of summer 2024 did better than expected. It had the second-best opening in the series. Meanwhile, another movie called ‘The Fall Guy’ continued to struggle.
Wes Ball’s ‘Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes’ brought excitement to the box office with a $56.5 million opening in the US and $72.5 million overseas, making a total of $129 million globally. If these numbers stay steady, it will be the second-best start of the series in North America.
The movie did well in the US, especially compared to ‘The Fall Guy’, which disappointed with only $27.7 million in its opening weekend. ‘Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes’ attracted a diverse audience, including young and older men. Surprisingly, audiences gave it a B grade despite good reviews from critics.
The movie is the fourth in a series that started with ‘Rise of the Planet of the Apes’ in 2011. It cost $160 million to make, which is less than the last two movies in the series.
Internationally, the movie did decently, especially in Latin America. It faced competition in China, impacting its performance there. Excluding China, it had the second-best opening in the series.
Even though people worry about audiences getting tired of sequels, this movie did better than the previous one in the series. It also did well in premium formats like IMAX.
‘The Fall Guy’, on the other hand, earned less and dropped 51% in its second weekend. More women watched it in the second week, but it’s unclear if the movie will reach its audience goals.
Other movies like ‘Challengers’, ‘Tarot’, and ‘Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire’ also continue to do well at the box office.
