Dave Filoni Weighs the Possibility of an R-Rated ‘Star Wars’: “It Has to Be Really Well Done”

Dave Filoni, who helps make decisions at Lucasfilm, said they always decide based on whether the idea is done really well.

He said they’re open to anything with Star Wars. Dave Filoni, who works at Lucasfilm, said this week that a more mature R-rated movie in the Star Wars series could be interesting.

“Yeah, I think it could be interesting,” Filoni said when asked about the idea during an interview on the Happy Sad Confused podcast. “But whatever we do, it has to be done really well.”

This idea of an R-rating comes just before Marvel releases Deadpool & Wolverine, their first R-rated movie. Star Ryan Reynolds recently said he was proud that Marvel allowed the R rating. He said it’s a big step for them and adds something new to the company.

Filoni also thinks about these things for Star Wars. He said, “When you look at something different like Andor, it’s so well done. Tony Gilroy and his team do such a great job. I think there’s an audience for that. But I also want to keep inspiring kids’ imaginations so they can grow up appreciating these things.”

He added, “Star Wars includes all kinds of styles, and the most important thing is the story and how it’s told. Each storyteller should stay true to what they’re good at. Otherwise, everyone would just try to be like George Lucas.”

Filoni said, “I’ve learned a lot from George, but I’m not the same as him when it comes to making movies. He’s a once-in-a-generation talent. I like wolves and put them in my Star Wars. We’re different, and that’s okay. But the values of making good choices, being kind, and overcoming fears are timeless, no matter what style you’re using.”
