Justin Baldoni Explains Decision to Age Up Characters in ‘It Ends With Us,’ Credits Blake Lively for Getting Taylor Swift Song in Trailer

The director and star, Justin Baldoni, explained that they wanted to make the story more relatable for everyone. To achieve this, they changed Colleen Hoover’s best-selling novel.

Three days after the trailer for “It Ends With Us” became popular online, Baldoni talked about the reactions and changes from the book to the movie. The film stars Baldoni, Blake Lively, and Brandon Sklenar. It is based on Hoover’s novel about Lily Bloom (played by Lively). Lily overcomes a problematic childhood and starts a new life, forming a deep connection with Ryle Kincaid (played by Baldoni). However, she starts noticing troubling similarities between Ryle and her parents.

At the premiere of The Garfield Movie in Los Angeles, Baldoni, who is also a producer, discussed the trailer’s reception. He acknowledged that fans were anxious about how the beloved book would be adapted. Baldoni expressed gratitude that people appreciated the effort and care put into making the movie, which took five years to create.

One significant change that received a lot of attention was making the characters older. In the book, Lily is 23, but in the movie, she is older. Baldoni explained that the book was written over ten years ago when young adult stories were popular. Still, they wanted the story to appeal to a broader audience. They aimed to make the story about women of all ages, not just a young woman.

The trailer also featured Taylor Swift’s song “My Tears Ricochet,” which received much attention. Baldoni credited Blake Lively, who is friends with Swift, for including the song in the trailer. Sony will release the movie on August 9.
