Oscar-Nominated Documentary Filmmaker Maite Alberdi Talks About Her Upcoming Narrative Debut

A very experienced writer of true stories is learning new things by making a movie based on Alia Trabucco Zerán’s book ‘Las Homicidas’, published in 2019.

Maite Alberdi made history as the first woman from Chile to be nominated for an Oscar with her movie ‘The Mole Agent’ in 2021. She was also nominated again this year with ‘The Eternal Memory.’

Despite her success, people still ask her strange questions about her work. “Someone asked me, ‘When will you make a real film?’ And I told them, ‘I make films,'” Alberdi told The Hollywood Reporter. Many people don’t think documentaries are absolute films. “I’ve made five films already, and I will keep making films.”

Alberdi loves using real life for stories because it’s full of experiences. “Reality is so powerful, and it’s so full of stories and experiences that I don’t need to write something because everything is already written,” she said.

But now she’s trying something new by getting ready to make her first narrative film based on Alia Trabucco Zerán’s book ‘Las Homicidas.’ The book talks about four Chilean women who committed murders and how society reacted. Alberdi is excited because this project lets her control everything more than she could with her other documentaries.

“You control everything. You write the script, the actors do what you ask them to do, and the problems can be fixed with money,” she said. “Everything is so controlled.”
