Rambling Roundup: Planet Hollywood Loses Its Shirt — (Almost) Everything Must Go!

In March, there will be two big auctions in Los Angeles where you can buy special things from famous movies. One is from March 20 to 24, called Heritage Auctions’ Treasures From Planet Hollywood. They will sell about 1,600 things like Princess Leia’s blaster, Indiana Jones’ whip, and the door from Titanic. You can buy Moses’ stone tablets from The Ten Commandments for $30,000.

Planet Hollywood spent a lot of money collecting these things over 30 years, and now they sell some of them. The other auction is from March 12 to 14 by Prop Store, and they have more than a thousand items. Both auctions are similar, like Marty McFly’s costume from Back to the Future III. The golden head of C-3PO from Star Wars, worn by Anthony Daniels, is in the Prop Store auction and might sell for $1 million. If that’s too expensive, you can bid on the head of Dot Matrix, a C-3PO lookalike from Spaceballs, at Planet Hollywood’s auction starting at $1,000.

UCLA Brings Sin Back to Movie Screens

This story is about an old movie called “The Wages of Sin.” It had a lot of bad things like drugs, prostitution, and murder in it. The movie could have been better made, but it will be shown again in April at a special event at UCLA. David Stenn worked hard to save the movie because the film was falling apart and almost lost forever. This movie is from 1938, known as an “exploitation film,” which means it tried to shock people with controversial topics. Even though the movie looks old and not well-made, some people think it’s important to keep it because it’s a rare part of history.

Artist Helps Herself to Self-Help Culture

A few years ago, an artist named Nora Turato from Amsterdam had a big art show at a famous museum in New York. But it made her very stressed, and she almost had a breakdown. She felt she needed therapy and to work on herself. She has a new art exhibit in Los Angeles at Sprüth Magers Gallery from February 28 to April 27.

The exhibit is called “It’s Not True!!! Stop Lying!” it talks about things like wellness and self-help that are talked about a lot but might not be true. In the art, there are pieces with words like “speaking my TRUTH!!!” to question whether things like authenticity are true. Nora thinks the idea of being “authentic” is being sold to us like we should be, and it’s like an egoic interpretation. Even though she questions these things, she also explored a wellness store in L.A. called Erewhon during her visit, which stressed her.

Hail, Mary: Mrs. Lincoln Meets Spielberg, Field, Kushner

Abraham Lincoln only sometimes had good luck at the theater. But there is a new funny play about his wife called “Oh, Mary!” It’s doing well off-Broadway, and famous people like Sally Field, who played Mary Todd Lincoln in a movie, came to watch it. The writer and star of the play, Cole Escola, was nervous when he found out they were coming. His play is like a cartoon and not based on real things. He thought it might be offensive to them. But it wasn’t! After the show, Sally Field, Steven Spielberg, and Tony Kushner, who worked on the movie, came backstage to take pictures with Escola. They didn’t talk about making a movie version, but Escola doesn’t think Spielberg would be interested. He said Spielberg is the only director he would trust to make a movie of his play, but he can’t imagine Spielberg wanting to do it.
