Night Swim is a scary movie made in America in 2024. Bryce McGuire wrote and directed it—it’s his first big movie. The story comes from a short film by McGuire and Rod Blackhurst in 2014. In the movie, there’s a family with Wyatt Russell, Kerry Condon, Amélie Hoeferle, and Gavin Warren. They have a swimming pool in their backyard that’s haunted.
Two big names, James Wan and Jason Blum, made the movie happen. They’re producers working with their companies Atomic Monster and Blumhouse Productions. This movie is the first one they released after joining forces on January 2, 2024.
Universal Pictures put Night Swim in theaters in the United States on January 5, 2024. Critics had different opinions about it—it got mixed reviews.

When the Waller family moves to a new house, they discover a spooky ghost or strange spirit in their backyard swimming pool that they don’t know about.

Production
Proof-of-concept origins
The movie started as a short film in 2014 by Bryce McGuire. He made it with his friend Rod Blackhurst in Michelle Branch’s backyard. Megalyn Echikunwoke was the leading actor in the short film, and her character inspired the main character in the longer movie.
McGuire got ideas from movies like Poltergeist, Creature from the Black Lagoon, Jaws, Christine, The Night of the Hunter, and The Abyss. He said the story is partly based on his life in Florida and dealing with water-related fears.
The short film became popular on YouTube when it was released on October 12, 2014. Because of its success, McGuire got noticed in the film industry. Judson Scott from Atomic Monster suggested the short to James Wan, who decided to buy the rights to turn it into a full-length movie.
Development of feature version
A new movie called Night Swim is being planned after the success of a film called M3GAN. The director, McGuire, will make this new movie based on his story. He’s adding more drama and emotions to intensify the scary parts. Like a dark fairy tale, the story will have a spooky pool and a mysterious feel. Actors Wyatt Russell and Kerry Condon will be in the movie, and it’s being made by James Wan and Jason Blum’s companies. In April, more actors joined the cast for the movie.
Filming
Filming started on April 11, 2023, in Altadena, California, and Los Angeles. They filmed for 34 days.
Music
Mark Korven, who made the music for the movie “The Black Phone” in 2021, also made the music for this film. McGuire liked Korven’s music and told him how he wanted it to feel like it was coming from the water, like a spooky choir from underwater. Korven liked the idea and agreed to work on it. McGuire thinks Korven is incredible and unique. Only Mark could make such weird and scary sounds for the movie. McGuire added popular songs from the 1980s to the soundtrack to match the movie’s style. One character, Ray Waller, likes 80s rock music, so they used that to show he’s into the past.”
Release
Night Swim came out in the United States by Universal Pictures on January 5, 2024. It was supposed to come out on January 19, 2024, but they changed it earlier.
