Thangalaan, which means ‘The Son of Gold,’ is a new action movie from India. Pa. Ranjith directs it, and K. E. Gnanavel Raja produces it under Studio Green and Neelam Productions. The main actors are Vikram and Pasupathy, joined by Parvathy Thiruvothu, Malavika Mohanan, Daniel Caltagirone, and Harikrishnan Anbudurai.
They officially told everyone about the movie in December 2021. They first called it Chiyaan 61 because it’s Vikram’s 61st movie, where he’s the main star. However, they changed the name to Thangalaan in October 2022. They started taking pictures for the film in October 2022 and finished in July 2023. The music is by G. V. Prakash Kumar, A. Kishor Kumar is in charge of the camera, and Selva RK is editing.
Thangalaan will be in theatres worldwide on January 26, 2024, Republic Day.

Development
While they were working on the movie Madras in 2014, Pa. Ranjith discussed a story idea with Vikram. They wanted to work on a film together, but it got delayed. Finally, in September 2021, they decided to start working on it again, and K. E. Gnanavel Raja from Studio Green would produce it.
At first, people thought Anirudh Ravichander would make the music, but later, they said it would be G. V. Prakash Kumar. On December 2, Studio Green officially announced the project as Chiyaan 61. Rashmika Mandanna was supposed to be the leading actress, but Malavika Mohanan replaced her because of some timing issues. Malavika even learned Silambam for her role in the movie.
In May 2022, Ranjith said the movie would be set in the Kolar Gold Fields in Karnataka. It’s a historical story about miners finding gold in the 19th century.
Then, on October 23, during Diwali, they revealed the title Thangalaan, along with a teaser for the movie.
Filming
Filming started in October 2022 in Chennai for a bit. Then they went to Kadapa and later to Madurai, where they filmed an action scene with Malavika and Vikram. In December, they went to Hogenakkal Falls. They also filmed in the Maldives that month.
In January 2023, they shot at a film city in Chennai. Malavika joined them in February. They finished this part in February and then went to the Kolar Gold Fields for about six weeks.
In the same month, English actor Daniel Caltagirone started filming his parts. They had one more round of filming in April in Madurai and Chennai. Vikram got hurt in May, so they stopped for a bit, but they started again in June and finished shooting on July 4.
Music
G. V. Prakash Kumar made the music and background score for the movie. It’s his first time working with Ranjith but his third time with Vikram after Deiva Thirumagal in 2011 and Thaandavam in 2012.
Times Music bought the rights to the music for ₹ five crore (US$630,000). They released a track called ‘Thangalaan Exclusive Making Theme’ in a behind-the-scenes video on April 17, 2023, and officially released it on April 19.
