Toby Yates, a Hollywood film editor whose work you might have seen in movies like ‘Blue Car’ and ‘The Midnight Meat Train’ and TV shows like ‘Brothers & Sisters’ and ‘Shameless,’ has passed away at 61. He was the son of Peter Yates, a director and producer who was nominated for an Oscar.

Toby Yates was born in London in 1962 and grew up in London and New York City. He studied filmmaking and editing in high school, learning from an experienced editor named Roy Lovejoy. After college, he studied film at Columbia University and even won an award for directing from MTV.

Yates edited various films and TV shows alongside directors like Karen Moncrieff and Ryûhei Kitamura. He even taught editing at the American Film Institute. He married Min Young Lee in 2014, and they had a son named Peter.

His father, Peter Yates, was also a renowned director known for movies like ‘Bullitt’ and ‘Breaking Away.’ Peter passed away in 2011 at the age of 81.

Toby Yates’ family announced that he passed away in Los Angeles on November 17, 2023, due to a stroke. He is survived by his wife, son, mother, sister, nephew, and niece.
