Harold and the Purple Crayon is a new movie. It’s about a boy named Harold who goes on a magical journey using his purple crayon. The movie is based on a book from 1955 with the same name. It will appear in theatres in the United States on August 2, 2024.

Production
Early attempts
In 1992, John B. Carls and Maurice Sendak started Wild Things Productions. They wanted to turn children’s books into movies, like “Where the Wild Things Are” and “Harold and the Purple Crayon.” Maurice Sendak and Denise Di Novi were in charge. They got Michael Tolkin to write the story and Henry Selick to direct, but Henry Selick left to work on another movie. Then, Spike Jonze joined to make a mix of natural acting and animation. David O. Russell helped with changing the story. They did a lot of planning and drawing, but the movie got stopped before they could start filming because of new bosses at TriStar Pictures.
2010, they discussed making a new version of “Harold and the Purple Crayon” using computer animation. Will Smith and James Lassiter wanted to make it, and Josh Klausner would write the story. Later, they added Dallas Clayton to help write. Columbia Pictures would make it, and Sony Pictures would show it in theatres.
Resurgence
Starting in February 2021, news came out that Zachary Levi would be in a new movie, but they didn’t say what character he’d play. They also said Carlos Saldanha would direct it, and David Guion and Michael Handelman would write the screenplay. John Davis would produce it.
Then, in January 2022, they added Lil Rel Howery to the cast. In February, Zooey Deschanel and Ravi Patel joined. Camille Guaty got a role in March 2022. Finally, Tanya Reynolds and Pete Gardner boarded in May 2022.
Around the beginning of 2022, live-action filming occurred in the Atlanta area.
Music
In February 2023, Batu Sener was chosen to make the music for the movie. Before this, he had helped with music for movies made by John Powell, who works with Saldanha.
Release
The movie will come out in theaters on August 2, 2024. First, it was supposed to come out on January 27, 2023, and then on June 30, 2023, but the dates changed.
