Rathnam is a new action movie from India in Tamil. It’s written and directed by Hari and produced by Kaarthekeyan Santhanam and Alankar Pandian with Stone Bench Films, Zee Studios, and Invenio Origin. The cast includes Vishal, Priya Bhavani Shankar, Ramachandra Raju, Samuthirakani, Gautham Vasudev Menon, and Yogi Babu.
They announced the film in April 2023 with the working title Vishal 34, as it’s Vishal’s 34th film, where he’s the leading actor. The official title, Rathnam, was revealed in December 2023. They started filming in July 2023. Devi Sri Prasad does the music, M. Sukumar is the cinematographer, and T. S. Jay handles the editing.

Production
Development
On April 23, 2023, Vishal shared news about his next project with director Hari, and he’s funding it through his own production company, Vishal Film Factory. They’re calling it Vishal 34 for now. This collaboration is their third film together after Thaamirabharani in 2007 and Poojai in 2014. They planned to start shooting after Vishal finished his work on Mark Antony in 2023. They had a special ceremony called muhurat puja on April 23.
In mid-June, it was said that Priya Bhavani Shankar would be the lead actress in the film, and she was working with Hari for the second time after Yaanai in 2022. By July, it was confirmed that Priya would play the lead role. The team considered Sai Pallavi and Aishwarya Lekshmi for the lead role before choosing Priya. In early July, they brought in Devi Sri Prasad to create the music and background scores for the film.
Filming
The main filming started on July 16, 2023, in Chennai. Then, in August, they moved the shooting location to Thoothukudi. There, they filmed an action scene during the schedule. On August 29, Vishal shared on X (formerly Twitter) that they finished this part of the filming. The second part of the shooting started in early October in a village in Tutukorin called Kimarasakkanapuram. During this time, Vishal even assisted the villagers in getting a drinking water facility.
Music
Devi Sri Prasad creates the music and background tunes for the movie. This is his sixth time working with director Hari after Aaru (2005), Singam (2010), Venghai (2011), Singam II (2013), and Saamy Square (2018). It’s his first time collaborating with Vishal.
