Self Reliance is a funny and exciting movie from America. It’s made by Jake Johnson, who wrote, directed, and acted in it. Other actors like Anna Kendrick, Natalie Morales, Mary Holland, Emily Hampshire, Christopher Lloyd, and Wayne Brady are in it too.
It first showed at the SXSW Film Festival on March 11, 2023. Then, on January 3, 2024, it had a special one-night show in theaters in the US by Neon. After that, it came out for streaming on Hulu on January 12, 2024.
Synopsis of Self Reliance
A sad man in Los Angeles gets asked to join a dangerous game on the internet where he can win a lot of money. He has to survive for a month while people try to hurt him. He figures out a rule: the bad people can only try to hurt him when he’s by himself. He tries to get everyone around him to believe the game is real so they’ll stay with him all the time and keep him safe.

Production of Self Reliance
MRC Film made the movie. Johnson told Netflix about the idea in 2017. At first, he called it DOG (“delusions of grandeur”) and said it was like a mix of “Jacob’s Ladder” and “Bottle Rocket”. He wrote the story while the COVID-19 pandemic was happening. They filmed it in Los Angeles for 19 days. Dan Romer made the music for the movie.
Release
The movie started at a big festival in March 2023. Then, Hulu got the rights to show it in the U.S. in September, but that changed to November. Finally, they said it would be on streaming in January 2024. Before that, a few theaters showed it for just one night in January 2024, along with talks about how they made the movie.
